Program Outline

Modules 1 - 4 - Basic Resilience Training

Module 1 - Introduction to Resilience: This module defines the skills and attitudes that make up resilience and the need for training and coaching. Lecture, discussion, Power Point and video presentations.

Module 2 - Learning from the Past/Learning from Role Models: This module encourages participants to examine the skills and attitudes that they have utilized in a crisis in the past and what they have learned, both good and bad, from role models and themselves. Small group discussions facilitated by coach/co-trainers.

Module 3 - Learning and Teaching Resilience Skills and Attitudes through Story Telling: This module utilizes Reaching Home and the Duct Tape Isn't Enough Guide as a tool for learning and teaching these skills. Participants have an opportunity to tell their own story. Small group discussions facilitated by co-trainers after an individual writing exercise.

Module 4 - Developing your Plan for Building Your Resilience: Participants develop their own plan utilizing materials from Duct Tape. Small group activities and discussions facilitated by co-trainers.

Module 5 - 6 - Teaching and Coaching others in These Skills and Attitudes

1-2 hours

Module 5 - Application of Resilience Skills to the individuals, groups, classes you are working with, in the setting in which you are working, eg. public schools, fire and rescue. The module focuses on how to integrate these skills into the activities you are presently doing with these individuals, groups/classes, eg. "Wrapping" the program around a developmental reading or math skills program. Integrating the program into firefighting training. Participants are asked to look at the challenges that they will face and how they will deal with them. Who they will need to sell and how they will do this. Individual writing exercise and small group discussion facilitated by co-trainers

Module 6 - What's Your Individual Plan for Maintaining Resilience while Working on this Project? Participants will review the eight factors/skills/attitudes that make for resilience and answer the following questions:

  1. What network of support will I utilize both in and outside of the organization while developing and conducting this project?
  2. How flexible will I be?
  3. Are my plans realistic? Will I take action?
  4. With whom do I need to open or increase communication?
  5. How invested, feelings-wise, will I be in this project? Why?
  6. How confident am I about the success I will have? Will doing this activity build my self-confidence?
  7. Will this project be meaningful for me and others involved in it?
  8. How will my level of optimism or pessimism impact what I do?

Individual writing exercise with small group discussion facilitated by co-trainers. Wrap Up and Evaluation.

Follow-up - Six optional monthly one hour bridge line (conference) calls facilitated by a trainer to support implementation and follow through by participants with their plans for building and maintaining resilience.
